Why Asti?

Why Asti?

The place where Lumière di Essenza found a home.

There are places we choose because they make sense.

And then there are places that seem to enter our lives for reasons we only begin to understand later.

For us, Asti has become one of those places.

When Charles and I first began imagining a European home for Lumière di Essenza, we were not simply searching for a city in which to open a boutique.

We were searching for something more difficult to define.

A place where the values behind Lumière could exist naturally—not simply inside our Maison, but in the life surrounding it.

Little by little, we found that place in Asti.

The Journey Did Not Begin in Asti

Our connection to Piemonte began before we ever imagined opening the first Lumière di Essenza Maison here.

In 2023, we purchased our first apartment in nearby Alessandria. When the idea of establishing Lumière in Italy began to become more real, Alessandria naturally became one of the places we considered.

It made sense. We already had a home there.

And yet, something inside us remained uncertain.

So we kept looking.

In September 2025, Charles and I returned to Italy and traveled along the Amalfi Coast. At the time, Sorrento had become another possibility.

It was beautiful, vibrant and internationally known. But as we spent time there, we began to understand what we were really searching for.

We did not simply want a place with tourists.

We wanted a place with life.

A place visitors could discover, but where everyday Italian life still unfolded naturally around them.

And then we met Emilia.

During a conversation in Sorrento, Emilia suggested another city:

Asti.

It was a simple suggestion.

But it changed our journey.

Five Days That Changed Everything

We changed our plans and traveled north, spending the final five days of our trip exploring Asti and looking for an apartment that might become our home.

And something happened that is difficult to explain through a business plan.

Asti felt right.

There were visitors, but not overwhelming crowds. There were cafés and restaurants, but they still belonged to the rhythm of the city. There were markets, museums, historic buildings, traditions, food and wine.

Beyond the city were the landscapes and vineyards of Piemonte and Monferrato.

What had begun as Emilia's suggestion was becoming something neither of us had expected.

Asti was beginning to feel like home.

A City That Still Remembers

Walking through Asti is to walk through layers of time.

Old brick towers rise between homes and cafés. Churches, courtyards and narrow streets carry the marks of generations that came before.

But what moves us most is that Asti's history does not feel separated from everyday life.

People walk beneath those towers on their way home. They gather in piazzas surrounded by centuries-old buildings. They sit with friends over coffee or a glass of wine while history quietly stands beside them.

The past is not simply preserved here.

It is still being lived.

The Beauty of Things Made Slowly

We have found ourselves drawn again and again to Asti's markets.

Perhaps because they express something we deeply believe at Lumière di Essenza.

There is beauty in knowing where something comes from.

Bread rests on simple wooden tables. Wheels of cheese sit beside handwritten signs. Local foods and handmade objects are offered by people who understand the things they are selling.

It reminds us that craftsmanship does not always need to announce itself as luxury.

Sometimes luxury is simply the time someone took to make something properly.

A Different Rhythm

Asti seems to move differently.

Not because life here stands still, but because the city somehow invites you to notice what surrounds you.

A balcony catching the afternoon sun.

Flags moving above a narrow street.

The texture of an old brick wall.

Friends talking outside a café.

A familiar street suddenly revealing something you had never noticed before.

For a House built around finding beauty in everyday rituals, there is something deeply familiar about that rhythm.

A Place That Feels Different to Each of Us

Asti has revealed itself differently to each of us.

For Marcelo, there is an unexpected and profound sense of belonging.

Walking through its streets can feel strangely familiar—as though this were somehow the city where he had been born and raised.

And yet, almost every day, Asti still surprises him: a street he has never walked, a quiet courtyard, a façade he had not noticed before, another small corner waiting to be discovered.

For Charles, the feeling is different.

Asti feels comfortable and familiar. He is at ease here while still experiencing the excitement of discovery.

But his connection is unfolding more gradually. He does not yet feel that he is from Asti in quite the way Marcelo somehow already does.

And perhaps that difference is part of the beauty of discovering a place together.

There is no single way to belong.

And Then There Is Lumière

There is a third perspective.

The one we share.

When we think about Lumière di Essenza and everything that has brought us to this moment, we increasingly believe that life guided us to the place where its first Maison was meant to take root.

Here we found a respect for what came before.

A closeness to the land.

The dignity of things made by hand.

The pleasure of gathering around a table.

And an understanding that beauty does not always need to announce itself.

These are ideas that have always lived at the heart of Lumière di Essenza.

A Different Measure of Success

When choosing a location for a store, conventional wisdom often begins with numbers.

How many people pass the door? How many visitors come each year? How much can we sell?

Those questions matter. We are building a business, and a business must be sustainable.

But they could not be the only questions.

Charles and I also had to ask ourselves:

What kind of life do we want to build around Lumière di Essenza?

We did not choose Asti because we were looking for millions of customers.

We chose Asti because we wanted to enjoy life while doing what we love.

We wanted Lumière to grow somewhere that would remind us every day why we created it.

Somewhere a Guest could enter our Maison, discover a fragrance or a bar of soap, and perhaps leave with something more than a product—a memory of Piemonte, of Asti, of a quieter moment in their journey.

For us, success cannot only be measured by how much we sell.

It must also be measured by the life we create while building it.

Perhaps Asti Chose Us

When we began this journey, we believed we were choosing Asti.

Today, we are not quite so certain.

Sometimes, walking these streets together, it feels as though Asti chose us.

Perhaps some places enter our lives at precisely the moment they are supposed to.

Perhaps the path that brought us here—from Alessandria, to Sorrento, to a conversation with Emilia, to five unexpected days in Asti—was never simply about finding the right location.

Perhaps it was about finding the place where Lumière could belong.

And now, behind an unassuming storefront on a street in Asti, another chapter is beginning.

We came here looking for the right place.

Somewhere along the way, we found something more.

We found where we belong.

With gratitude for the journey,

Marcelo & Charles
